Calypso Rose

Calypso Rose born McCartha Linda Sandy-Lewis, April 27, 1940 in Bethel, Tobago is a calypsonian. She began writing songs at the age of 15,turned professional in 1964 and has written over 800 songs and recorded over 20 albums.

 

 

 

Rose's father was a leader with the Spiritual Shouter Baptists. Her family was very traditional and opposed her singing in Carnival Tents.She composed her first Calypso in 1955 after seeing a man steal the spectacles off of a lady’s face in the Croisée, San Juan. In the song, she advises Tobagonians to stay at home, because Trinidad was no place for them. Originally she used Crusoe Kid as her stage name, the name Calypso Rose was given to her by the Spoiler, and tent members Piggy and Spike.

Travelling outside of Trinidad and Tobago for the first time in 1963, Rose covered the islands from Grenada to St. Thomas. She won the Calypso King contest and the Roadmarch in St. Thomas with her first recording, Cooperation. In 1966 she wrote the song Fire in Me Wire, the first calypso ever sung two years running at the Trinidad carnival, in 1966 and 1967

Rose was the first female to win the Trinidad Road March competition, in 1977 with her song Gimme More Tempo and in 1978 she took the title again with Come Leh We Jam. In the same year she won the Calypso King competition, the first time it had ever been awarded to a female. The competition's title was changed to Calypso Monarch in her honour.

Rose was in concert in Paris au petit Bain on May 26th, 2012.

Cover To Cover

The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl is on view at MAM from March 18 – June 10, 2012.

 For many people, record covers have the capacity to trigger memories and convey emotion in the most personal way, making them significant not only as tangible connections to music, but for some, as a first encounter with visual art. Cover to Cover is an installation in The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl in which artists were commissioned to create an artwork by selecting twenty LP records based on cover visuals.

Miami Art Museum asked Miami-based collectors to choose four records from their own collections that are both personally meaningful and visually compelling. Hear their selections at MAM, during The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl, on view March 18 – June 10, 2012.

WORKING for a Living

The revamped, updated, and contemporized musical WORKING features the music of Tony winners Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell), Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights) and Grammy winner James Taylor opens this week at the Caldwell Theatre Company.  The original source material for this unabashedly American musical is based on the original novel WORKING by Studs Terkel.

”WORKING has a structure similar to A Chorus Line in that we really dive inside the mindset of these characters,” said Clive Cholerton, Artistic Director. “What we also see is just how interconnected we all are and how shared all of our experiences are. Its themes are possibly the most universal of any show we’ve done recently at Caldwell Theatre Company.”

Lost (Generations) and Found (Objects)

An interesting Friday we had at uVu as we traveled north to the Boca Raton Museum of Art, only to enter and imaginary world courtesy of Colombian artist Federico Uribe and his fanciful world of animals (both wild and domesticated) made entirely of found objects.  As he explains "People kill trees to make books, I disassemble books to make trees."  In this clip meet Mr. Uribe and explore his "world."

 

 

 

Later that evening we grabbed a few minutes backstage at the Colony Theatre on Lincoln Road to talk with the cast of the New World School of the Arts' production of Spring Awakening

Why Arts Matter

This past week, we've had some shining examples of High School Arts programs in Broward County making a difference in the lives of the students and the community as well.

Discover New Music at the Miami Music Festival!

Have you ever caught yourself searching endlessly for new music to add to your library?  Do you want to discover new artists and tunes? Well, Miami has a treat for you.  The Miami Music Festival will be in town from Thursday, November 11 through Sunday, November 14.  The event will showcase all genres of music from hip-hop to jazz and will feature acts from all around the world including emerging local artists.

There will be a special showcase on Saturday, November 13 at Flavour in Coconut Grove from 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.  This showcase will be hosted by Jessy Schuster, host of Pulse, a WPBT2’s original production.  New artists such as Mosiah, Honorebel, Mixed Culture, Jahfe and Fully Loaded Band will perform.
