Knight Asks You To Decide

South Floridians can decide which of five up-and-coming organizations should receive $20,000 as part of the first Knight Arts Challenge People’s Choice Award. To vote, watch the nominees’ videos at KnightArts.org/peopleschoice and then text to support your favorite. The nominees are: 6th Street Dance Studio, a nonprofit studio in Little Havana, Arts Garage, a cultural hub in Palm Beach, FUNDarte, producing multicultural exhibits and performances, LAB Miami, a co-working space at the intersection of art and business, and Urgent, Inc., working in part with the arts to revitalize urban communities. Now in its fifth year, the Knight Arts Challenge is a community-wide contest for the best ideas for the arts. Sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the challenge has invested $17 million in projects that help bring South Florida together through culture.

Nick Cave at the Norton Museum of Art

Nick Cave: Meet Me at the Center of The Earth

The Norton Museum of Art is pleased to be the only venue in the Southeastern United States to present the nationally circulating, spectacular exhibition  Nick Cave: Meet Me at the Center of The Earth, from October 9, 2010 through January 9, 2011. Featured in VOGUE Magazine’s famed September Fashion Issue, Nick Cave’s “Soundsuits” are fabricated from radically diverse, multi-layered, found materials.  Over thirty examples of these mixed media sculptures comprise this exhibition along with videos and photographs of the sculptures in action. 
Evocative of African, Caribbean and other ceremonial ensembles as well as extreme design found in high fashion, Cave’s work explores issues of identity and transformation through his intuitive layering of cultural references.  Each visionary piece celebrates craftsmanship in its handmade construction from scavenged materials as varied as yarn, beads, buttons, sequins, bottle caps, vintage toys and human hair.  Following in a long tradition of artists who use what is available and affordable, Nick Cave finds the ordinary and discarded materials from our surroundings and re-contextualizes them into extraordinary and meaningful works of art.
As Roberta Smith, critic for The New York Times, said in her 2006 review, “Whether Nick Cave’s efforts qualify as fashion, body art or sculpture…they fall squarely under the heading of Must Be Seen to Be Believed.”

Steichen a Pose

This is where you can find the uVu team tomorrow. 

The internationally renowned exhibition Edward Steichen: In High Fashion the Condé Nast Years, 1923-1937 will make its debut in Florida at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University on February 26 through April 11, 2010. The exhibition features over two hundred of Steichen’s celebrity and fashion portraiture made while he served as chief photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair magazines between 1923 and 1937.  His influence is felt in the field to this day.

 

Steichen’s portraits of icons include Joan Crawford, Winston Churchill, Greta Garbo, Katharine Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Amelia Earhart, Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire, Loretta Young, Martha Graham, Gloria Swanson, Dorothy Parker.

 

“Edward Steichen produced a body of work of unequalled brilliance.  He revolutionized fashion photography, and pioneered a new visual language of glamour, profoundly shaping the look of celebrity and fashion to this day” said Irvin Lippman, Executive Director of the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale. 

 

The exhibition is organized by the Musée de l'Elysée, Lausanne, and the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography, Minneapolis, in conjunction with the International Center of Photography (ICP). It opened in New York City at ICP in early 2009, and has since been shown throughout Europe.

 

Fashion designer Ivonne de la Vega has created a gown inspired by Steichen's photographs of high fashion.  It will be on view during the exhibition and sold as a benefit for the Museum of Art.

Miami Today Newsmaker Profile - George Feldenkreis, Chairman Perry Ellis Int'l.

Perry Ellis International: 29 brands. Two thousand employees. Offices from Portland, OR, to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. An estimated $760 million-plus in revenues last year. And the buck stops here in Miami, where Cuba-born entrepreneur George Feldenkreis chooses to hang his hat.

Mr. Feldenkreis got his start peddling window glass in his early days in Miami, seeing more success later selling auto parts. He ventured into apparel with his brother in Puerto Rico, a business he expanded into the US that exploded in the ’80s after his son joined the company, then called Supreme International.

Since, Mr. Feldenkreis and his team have grown the company into the designer, distributor and licensor known now as Perry Ellis International after a $74.6 million acquisition in 1999.

The company has taken a hit in today’s rough economy but is staying ahead by following the trends and dropping underperforming businesses.

Mr. Feldenkreis says the company would be better off based in New York, a fashion hub and choice international business venue. But he’s a Cuban and Miamian through and through, he says, and values quality of life. “Not everything is money.”

He talked business, fashion and family with Miami Today reporter Risa Polansky at Perry Ellis’ local headquarters.  You can see the profile here on uVu
