Christina Petterson discusses her performance piece she is preparing for Art Live 2012. She is revisiting the life of Marie Anntoinette in attempts to ressurect her in a different light. 

Art Live 2012 is an interactive, performance based, contemporary "art happening" and fair in which artists and exhibitors are invited to share the creative process unfolding spontaneously in every form of artistic medium and to the extent possible, engage the fairgoers in the creative process. 

We like to say, don't just see art, be it! Performing artists and exhibitors alike to step outside the four walls of their galleries, institutions, residencies and studios to join us in an uplifting coming together of art and community for cause.

About the end/SPING BREAK:

the end / SPRING BREAK is a nomadic artist-run project committed to developing new modes of
considering issues in contemporary art and culture within South Florida communities.

Our focus is to develop programming that seeks to engage our audience as participants and
elicit a discussion surrounding the thematic concept chosen for that event. In collaboration with
various artists and members of the community, our goal is to stimulate a dialogue that will enable
one event to inform another in a manner that reflects the movement between the different methods
of presenting ideas.

Our programming will include but not be limited to lectures, exhibitions, site-specific projects,
publications, educational workshops, etc.

T O W E R   O F   B A B E L, act two, World-Systems Theory, 2012 is a performance where a trinity of consciousness become one... in an attempt to expose and explore the confusion of tongues, or variations in human language used to structure and divide contemporary society. This is a playful investigation into, The most well-known version of the world-system approach developed by US sociologist, Immanuel Maurice Wallerstein.  World-systems theory... which simple put divides our one world into three groupings. from the bottom up;

Periphery countries - Third world -  lower class -  preformed by Sinisa Kukec
Semi-periphery countries - Second world -  middle class - preformed by Brandon Opalka
Core countries - upper class - First world -  preformed by Stephan tugrul

Core countries focus on higher skill, capital- intensive production, and the rest of the world focuses on low-skill, labor-intensive production and extraction of raw materials.This constantly reinforces the dominance of the core countries. Nonetheless, the system is dynamic, and individual states can gain or lose the core (semi-periphery, periphery) status over time. For a time, some countries become the world hegemon; throughout last few centuries, this status has passed from the  Netherlands,  to the United Kingdom, and most recently, the United States of America. Until the top may reach unto the heavens... we are all one, and yet many from the bottom up.

Liz Ferrer is part performer, part musician, part artist.  She's recently helped create Southernmost Situations an artist collective and she will be participating in the Art Live 2012 "happening."  In this video she talks about her love of things southernmost, her piece for Art Live and other matters.

South Floridians can decide which of five up-and-coming organizations should receive $20,000 as part of the first Knight Arts Challenge People’s Choice Award. To vote, watch the nominees’ videos at KnightArts.org/peopleschoice and then text to support your favorite. The nominees are: 6th Street Dance Studio, a nonprofit studio in Little Havana, Arts Garage, a cultural hub in Palm Beach, FUNDarte, producing multicultural exhibits and performances, LAB Miami, a co-working space at the intersection of art and business, and Urgent, Inc., working in part with the arts to revitalize urban communities. Now in its fifth year, the Knight Arts Challenge is a community-wide contest for the best ideas for the arts. Sponsored by the John S. and James L. Now more than ever in these challenging times, local nonprofit organizations need to be recognized by the community they serve for their tireless efforts. They are essential to the vitality of our community. On Friday, February 24, 2012,the2nd Annual BankAtlantic Non-Profit Academy Awards presented by 2-1-1 Broward and hosted by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino recognized the collective efforts of Broward non-profits and the individual accomplishments of non-profit leaders at an awards ceremony and luncheon.

Student Accident Survivor Organizes “Power Over Pain” Walk

Part of NSU’s CommunityFest on Feb. 11

Event to raise awareness and research funding for invisible illnesses and those living in chronic pain.


When 28-year-old Nova Southeastern University (NSU) student Renee Glick exits her car after parking in a handicapped spot, she is often met with cries of “you should be ashamed!”

Young and fashion-savvy, Glick may look like the picture of health. However, looks can be deceiving. Glick, and more than 116 million other Americans, live each day in potentially debilitating pain.

That’s why the doctoral student and her graduate student organization NSPIRE in NSU’s Center for Psychological Studies is mobilizing students across the campus to organize the first-ever “Power Over Pain Walk” in conjunction with the university’s annual free “CommunityFest” carnival on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 at 10 a.m.

Glick has suffered from spinal nerve damage and the invisible illness of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) since 2006 as a consequence of sustaining multiple accident related injuries and corrective surgeries, which were due to a careless driver. After being rushed to the hospital, Glick survived, but her life was never the same, as CRPS pain can surpass digit amputation. Now Glick is on a mission to shed light on the invisible world of those suffering from chronic pain in silence.

“Pain is a topic avoided by most people; as if recognizing the existence of pain makes it contagious,” Glick said. “I’m a pain warrior and encourage other people in the pain community to speak up.”

Paul Gileno, Founder of U.S. Pain Foundation, said the goal of “Power Over Pain Walk & CommunityFest,” sponsored by NSU, the U.S. Pain Foundation, and the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Association, is to raise awareness about individuals living in chronic pain, provide funding for pain research and education, and start a much-needed dialogue between pain warriors and the community.

The Power Over Pain Walk on Saturday, Feb. 11 starts at 10 a.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m. Viewing stations and tents will be set up along the path for supporters to watch and sponsors to distribute water and care packages. Walkers also receive entry to NSU’s 9th Annual CommunityFest, an official walk T- Shirt and the opportunity to support a great cause.

Walkers will also be making strides toward healing, and be treated to gourmet cuisine from local restaurants, enjoy rides, entertainment, and all the festivities of CommunityFest.

“I have learned to respect my limitations, not apologize for requiring help, to approach challenges with ingenuity, and most importantly to take back my voice,” Glick said. “Although I would give anything to have been unscathed by the accident, I am grateful for finding life purpose amidst the ruins.”

Miami Today Profile: Eduardo Padron

Since moving to the United States as a refugee at 15, Eduardo Padron has spent 41 years at Miami Dade College, working his way through the ranks at the only school he said would give him a chance after high school.

 

Since graduating from the college, Mr. Padron has worked as an assistant professor of economics, department chair, division director, associate dead, dean, vice president, campus president and now college president.

His goal is to ensure that all students, young and old, rich or poor, receive access to a quality education at a low cost.

“Opportunity changes everything,” he said, “and our concern is making sure that people who have the least opportunity are given a chance to get an education…Education is the passport to a better life and we’re worried about the low-income people and their ability to obtain a college [degree].”

As head of one of the most diverse institutions in the nation, in 2003 Mr. Padron pushed to receive state approval to offer bachelor’s degrees through the college. He has advocated on behalf of the Dream Act to provide those born outside of the US with cheaper tuition costs, and has been asked to serve on the White House Commission on Education Excellence for Hispanic Americans, where he works to provide educational opportunities to all nationalities.

“This institution has changed many lives,” he said, “and it’s demonstrated that you can have open access and excellent academic programs. The students who finish here are second to none and are able to compete in the best universities in the country.”

Mr. Padron discussed his plans to provide Miami-Dade residents with a quality education, how he plans to counter recent reductions in state funding and what the college is doing to better the community with Miami Today staff writer Ashley Hopkins at his downtown office.
