One of South Florida's most acclaimed artist, Purvis Young, passed away in April 2010 at 67 years old in Miami. He left behind an art legacy famous for his painting on discarded objects as his canvases, including doors, cardboard, and pieces of wood.
An exhibit at the Miami Convention Center features his work in collaboration with the Bass Museum.
One of the early highlights from the 25th annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF) was the feature film "Bones" which had a screening this past Saturday. On hand was the young cast and director Frank Pestarino. The title character is played by Jimmy Bennett, who has a ton of credits already at the ripe old age of 14, including the role of J.J. Powell on the TV series "No Ordinary Family."
Jimmy was the recipient of the FLIFF's "Star on the Horizon" award and along with "Bones" co-stars, Melissa Ordway and Jonna Walsh, took some time to talk with uVu after tdoing a Q & A with the audience at Cinema Paradiso.

After working for everyone from the Florida Marlins during their world championship season to Emilio and Gloria Estefan during Miami’s “Latin Explosion” República Chairman and CEO Jorge Plascencia decided to do things his way and left the corporate world behind to establish the firm with his business partner Luis Casamayor. Now, four years later it counts Burger King, the Miami Dolphins and Sedano’s Supermarkets as clients. The firm offers integrated marketing communications, bringing together traditional advertising, public relations, marketing, promotions and digital media and tries to work hand-in-hand with clients to help them accomplish strategic goals. “We work hand-in-hand understanding what their strategy is and where they want to go, where they want to take sales, what markets they are planning to develop and you know we're with them every step of the way,” Mr. Plascencia said. He discussed the firm’s origins and future, as well as Amigos For Kids – the child and family support charity he’s run for about 20 years, in its new Coral Way office with Miami Today staff writer Zachary S. Fagenson.
Although not face to face, Alex Sink and Rick Scott each took the podium at separate luncheons held by the Forum Club of The Palm Beaches during the last two weeks. Scott on Thursday, October 7 and Sink on Friday, October 15.
Each also took questions from the attendees and below are the two speeches in their entirety.
Okay, it is almost Halloween and time to roll out one of our favorite "guilty pleasures." Key West icon and legendary resident, Robert The Haunted doll has been the most watched uVu video since we launched the site.
The editor for this story still refers to Robert, with respect, as his little buddy, although he generally looks over his shoulder first.
With the slew of campaign ads on TV, this is still likely to be the most frightening video you see over the next two weeks. At least Robert is running any negative ads about his opponent for official statewide legend, the Skunk Ape.
Well, the uVu team ran into another great idea courtesy of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA is already the home of the Cappy Awards and the Stars on Parade) for getting younger audiences involved in the arts. The Teen Ambassador program which screens prospective Broward High School Students and asks that they:
contribute to establishing a vital informational link to their peers regarding the arts both locally and nationally. In addition to this, the Teen Ambassadors will attend performances presented at the Broward Center and its affiliated venues in order to expand their interest in the arts and be asked to provide reviews for postings on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, or BrowardCenter.org.
At the kickoff for the 20th Anniversary season at the BCPA we got to peek in as the Teen Ambassadors got ready for their first night on the job.
But the night was just starting for these Young Ambassadors, as the house lights dimmed they stepped inside to watch the opening night of Young Frankenstein. Here are a few of their reviews:
From Dagoberto, Flanagan High School -
In what truly was a monstrous event, the Broward Center launched it’s 20th Anniversary season with the celebration of the Young Frankenstein premiere event. From beginning to end, the night came alive with the spirit of Frankenstein himself. The Au-Rene theatre’s lobby was complete with cut-outs, a photographer, characters, and even a red carpet to welcome the audience with a feeling that they were genuine V.I.P. at the Broward Center that night. If you’re not familiar with the legend of Frankenstein, the story follows the young Dr. Frankenstein (pronounced Fronk-ehn-steen) as he becomes a part of the family business in attempting to create a monster. The musical mastermind Mel Brooks took this concept and created the wonderful story of Young Frankenstein equipped with an enchanting score and a hilarious book based on his 1974 comedic film. As soon the lights dimmed, the audience was thrown into the imaginative world of Transylvania. Christopher Ryan, who played Frederick Frankenstein, leading the show with great poise. He made the role his own with a quirky and unconventional touch. Along the way we encountered amusing characters such as Igor, played by Cory English, and Inga, played by Synthia Link, who carried the show with their humorous slapstick jokes. However, one character that really stood out was Frau Blucher, played by Joanna Glushak. Although a supporting role, Glushak stole the show with the riveting number “He Vas My Boyfriend.” Her show-stopping performance was accompanied with fantastic acting and prominent humor. Despite some technical difficulties with set and lighting, the powerful ensemble and sensational dance numbers definitely brought it‘s share to the table for an “electrifying” performance. With a spectacular cast and a script complete with sexual puns that will have audience members kneeling in laughter, anyone who witnesses the marvel of Young Frankenstein will undoubtedly fall into “Deep Love” with the show.
