From the Joe DiMaggio Legends Game

The 22nd Annual Joe DiMaggio Legends Game was held at Ft. Lauderdale Stadium yesterday on what could best be described as a "beautiful day for baseball."

Despite some early traffic snarls (the Pro Bowl practices were held across the street at Lockhart Stadium the same morning), hundreds of fans turned out to see some of the legends of the game take the field once more and this time for a very good cause.

According to Kevin Janser, the VP and Executive Director of the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Foundation, money raised today will go to support the creation of a new, free standing Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital.  For anyone who has had to use the services of JDCH, you know what an excellent job they do and the commitment to the south Florida community is second to none.

Opening of Alex Rodriguez Educational Center

uVu intern Danny Carratala attended the Official Opening of Alex Rodriguez Educational Center at Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s Hank Kline Facility on Jan. 27, 2010. The Alex Rodriguez Educational Center, a $1.5 million project, is an 8,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility that houses two technology labs, an area for internet use, classrooms and homework study areas and a large teen center, where the kids can get together and enjoy games and equipment. Hundreds of children will use the two-story building every week.

Punish the Deed Not the Breed

The State of Florida has a statue in place since 1990 protecting cities and counties all across the State of Florida from passing BSL (767.14). For the past 2 years Representative Perry Thurston of Broward County, Plantation has made it his personal mission to overturn the very law that protects all breeds of dogs from all forms of discrimination in Florida. With that being said, this is not a Pit Bull issue anymore  Any city or county within the State of Florida has the right to discriminate against any breed of dog they want. Therefore, Rottweiler, Dobermans, American Bulldogs, Husky, Boxer, Chow Chow, German Shepherds, Mastiffs, Akita or any other breed they wish to ban, can be and will be done.

An intern’s view behind the scenes:

I had my first live production experience on WPBT2’s Pulse, a TV series dedicated to Caribbean current events. As an intern I was elated to get a behind the scenes view of a production. I arrived at the studio an hour before the production started and waited eagerly to assist with the production. Just as I expected, everyone was busy, making sure everything was in place before broadcasting live over the air.

I had the pleasure of meeting the host and also the producer of the show. As an intern, I wasn’t quite sure what my role was that night, so I stood back and waited for further instructions. About twenty minutes passed until I had my first task. I was asked to wash the coffee mugs that were to be placed on the set for the guest and the host. So I made my way to the sink and got to work. I understand that washing a couple of mugs might not seem like a big deal but I took this task seriously. These weren’t just ordinary mugs to me; these were mugs that were going to be seen by many people through a live broadcast all over the country. I washed and shined the mugs thoroughly and placed them on the set. Its official, I’m finally responsible for something showed on television, even though they were only a couple of coffee mugs.

 Not long after I completed my first task, I eagerly accepted another. This time I was assigned to answer the phone calls of viewers hoping to share their stories and opinions of the show’s topic live over the air. Shortly after the show aired the phones started to ring. At first I answered questions from callers about donations and I gave them information on various charities. Soon after, I accepted call after call and listened to the stories the viewers had to tell. Then I transferred calls to the producer so the stories may be told live over the air. So I guess you could say people voices were heard on television because of me. Just like the coffee mugs, I have yet another television accomplishment.

Although I played a minor role behind the scenes, well way behind the scenes, I had a fantastic experience. I readily await my next challenge behind the scenes.

Miami Today Newsmaker - City of Miami Commissioner Marc Sarnoff

Three years after Miami Commissioner Marc Sarnoff took office, a lot has changed at Miami City Hall, with a new mayor and commissioners. This year, Mr. Sarnoff took on the role of commission chair and plans to exercise his agenda-setting power to remove items without adequate funding to protect taxpayers’ money.

With regards to his District 2, encompassing downtown, Brickell and Coconut Grove, Mr. Sarnoff is working to make sidewalk improvements downtown, build a park for Brickellites and complete the pink wall project along US-1.

Also chairman of the Downtown Development Authority, he plans to increase safety downtown, which in the long run could include adding its own police force, but city budget cuts are a concern.

The commissioner, who practices maritime law, is also concerned with the future of Watson Island. First, he wants to ensure the city gets paid, and long term, he says, the concept of a marina for luxury yachts could be an economic boost.

Mr. Sarnoff discussed his concerns, goals and vision with Miami Today reporter Yudislaidy Fernandez at City Hall in Coconut Grove.
