Issues approached State Senator Anitere Flores, R-District 38 for a statement on immigration reform in light of this week's legislative discussions. Below is her full statement provided to us Thursday afternoon, bold added:
As of Wednesday, April 27th, Senate President Mike Haridopolos has decided to remove me as the one in charge from the Immigration reform bill. Senator JD Alexander, from Lake Wales, Florida will now take over this issue.
This move makes clear that the Senate has decided to take a different position on the bill than what had been approved at the Judiciary Committee. I’m not aware of what that position is. I’m eager to see what these proposals may be. However I suspect that they may not be consistent with a position that I can support.
From the beginning of this process I said that I did not and would not support an Arizona Style bill for Florida, and that we needed a Florida solution for this complex issue. It would have been easier for me to stay out of the fray, but I felt that it was imperative for our south Florida community to have a voice in the matter.
I am disappointed at the way this issue has been handled, but I remain committed to ensuring that our concerns are addressed.
