FLORIDA JEWISH HISTORY MONTH

FLORIDA JEWISH HISTORY MONTH FOCUSES ON POLITICS AND KICKS OFF ON SUNDAY, JANUARY 6, 2008 AT JEWISH MUSEUM OF FLORIDA

Artofaging1 The fifth annual observance of Florida Jewish History Month (FJHM) will kick-off at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at the Jewish Museum of Florida on South Beach. There will be no admission charge for this or any other event at the Museum during Florida Jewish History Month.

The theme for this year's observance is Floridian Jews in Politics. A panel discussion with current and former public office holders, moderated by former State Representative Elaine Bloom, will feature a discussion on how Jewish traditions and values have impacted Jewish politicians, as well as laws written by the politicos and experiences with antisemitism and prayer breakfasts.

The Jan. 6 program is in memory of Kenneth M. Myers, who served in the Florida House of Representatives 1964-1969 and in the State Senate 1969-1980. Myers, who passed away 7-29-07, was known as "one of the best friends the people of Florida had."

BODIES: The Exhibition in Fort Lauderdale

Bodies_exhibit_1_1 Your chance to get an up-close look at preserved human bodies is here. The bodies exhibition is visiting Las Olas River Front in Fort Lauderdale located at
300 SW First Avenue, Suite 214.

The Exhibition takes visitors through galleries providing an up-close look inside the skeletal, muscular, reproductive, respiratory, circulatory and other systems of the human body. Many of the whole body specimens are dissected in vivid athletic poses, allowing the visitor to relate to everyday activities. In addition, authentic human specimens illustrate the damage caused to organs by over-eating and lack of exercise. A healthy lung is featured next to a black lung ravaged by smoking in a vivid comparison more powerful than any textbook image.

The human body specimens in the exhibition are preserved through a revolutionary technique called polymer preservation. In this process, human tissue is permanently preserved using liquid silicone rubber that is treated and hardened. The end result is a rubberized specimen, preserved to the cellular level, showcasing the complexity of the body's many bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels and organs.

Setting Up for Women's Health

From behind the scenes at WPBT/Channel 2's Fifth Annual Speaking of Women's Health Conference, these pictures hopefully capture the remarkable energy of the Channel 2 staff and volunteers (from South Florida Homeschool Key Club and their advisor Colleen Kellems) who spent most of the day Friday and will be working well past midnight and into Saturday morning to get the stage, display rooms and registration desks ready for the more than 1000 women who will attend the conference on Saturday.

Halloween in Key West

I've recently returned from a visit to Key West.  For me it was a chance to meet with some of the talented individuals who define and support the arts community there. At a meeting with some of the major arts organizations I learned about some upcoming activities and exhibitions, but probably none were as curious and grizzly as the upcoming release of the third printing of UNDYING LOVE, a book about Faux Count Carl von Cosel which will be paired with the movie, never seen before, of the musical, Undying Love, that was performed at the Appelrouth Grill 13 years ago.  The release and screening will be held on Halloween Eve at the Tropic Cinema on Key West.

I was familiar with the legends of Robert The Haunted Doll at who "lives" at the Martello Musuem on Key West, but I had never heard of the story of von Cosel who was a technician at the Marine Hospital in Key West in 1929.  Legend say he fell madly in love with the beautiful Elena Milagro Hoyos 180pxtanzler_075 when he x-rayed her chest.  He was fearful she had a form of tuberculosis known as "€œhasty consumption"€, and the negatives confirmed the infirmity by showing the deadly lesions.  Smitten, the Count did everything in his power to keep her alive, including therapy that involved Frankenstein-ish electrical contraptions.  Sadly, in 1931 on Halloween Night, she succumbed to the dreadful disease, and in memoriam Count von Cosel constructed a grand mausoleum in the Key West cemetery, which he visited every evening.

Here is where the tale gets even more gruesome, it was allegedly on one of those dark nights that  Elena began singing to him from the tomb.  It was always the same song, "€œLa Boda Negra", "The Black Wedding"€, about a distraught lover who dug up the remains of his fiancé and took her to his bed covered with flowers, recited his wedding vows and committed suicide.  The Count knew the meaning of the song €”he too must take his bride home. You can find versions of this legend all over the internet if you're interested in learning more or you can take torch and pitchfork in hand and head to the Tropic Cinema

The movie of the musical, directed by Tom Murtha, has a marvelous cast:  Tom Luna, Mira Nigron, Gordon Mackey, Melody Cooper, Vicki Roush, Michael Alpern, Chris Stone and Armando Lodigiani - €”musicians Woody Allen, Quint Lange and Ben Harrison.

The original cast will be there, as will the author to sign books.  Refreshments and "€œtreats" will also be served afterwards.  And of course, there will be a viewing.

Miami Carnival

Generationxcarnival2 Carnival starts in Trinidad and Tobago in February and the circuit ends in Miami in October. Thousand of people waived their flags up in the air at the sound of soca and calypso. Children danced to the beat of the music trucks and families enjoy Caribbean food such as bake and shark or curry chicken with rice and peas. uVu was there to capture the essence of carnival through the colorful costumes the wild dancing, and the overall excitement. Performers such as Alison Hinds who is nicknamed “The Queen of Soca” took the stage as soon as the sun set.

Miami is known for its cultural diversity and the most common question that will open conversations is “Where are you from?”

On October 8th, Miami welcomed every island of the Caribbean at the Bicentennial Park to celebrate the 23rd edition of Carnival.

You can take a look at the overall Carnival here

The Crisis in Arts and Culture Funding

Last week a roundtable forum on “The Crisis in Arts and Culture Funding,” was held at the Gusman Center and attending the event were members of the Miami arts community from organizations both large and small.  Miami Today was responsible for the gathering  which sought to examining ways to balance conflicting demands for both capital and operating funds in an era of reduced local government aid and increasing demand from arts and cultural organizations.  It was an important opportunity for members of this community and the public that supports them, to hear some frank and candid opinions, to explore some new options and to gather in a show of solidarity. If you missed this opportunity, you can now see the entire evening's discussion on uVu, WPBT's video sharing website (in the Speaker's Corner section or Keyword Search: "Miami Today") .
