The Children's Trust 211 Helpline Prepares for Increase in Call Volume to Assist Haitian Earthquake Victims
While The Children's Trust and other agencies serving children and families in Miami-Dade County plan and prepare to help earthquake victims from Haiti upon their arrival here, Switchboard of Miami, operators of The Children's Trust 211 Helpline, is taking steps to serve as a major resource to connect Haitian and Creole speaking families to information and local services.
Currently, The Children's Trust Helpline operates 24 hours a day in English, Spanish and Creole. All calls are free and confidential.
The 211 telephone counselors are best equipped to connect families to basic needs, health and social services here in Miami-Dade. The Helpline is also coordinating with national and local organizations to direct the Haitian callers to obtain the assistance they need.
Originally formed as a suicide prevention hotline, Switchboard counselors remain adept at providing information and referral, counseling, crisis intervention and suicide prevention. Families in Miami-Dade grieving over lost loved ones or agonizing over the missing and troubling images in the news, may call The Children's Trust Helpline at 211 for counseling.
