This documentary explores the life and legacy of a woman whose voice symbolized the soul of a nation and captured the hearts of fans worldwide. Erupting onto the Cuban music scene as the lead singer for La Sonora Matancera, Celia Cruz broke down barriers of racism and sexism. This film shows the diversity of the people whose lives she touched, from stars such as Quincy Jones, Andy Garcia, and Wyclef Jean, to ordinary people all over the world. The story traces Celia’s exile from her beloved Cuba until her death in 2003. A co-presentation from Latino Public Broadcasting with the National Black Programming Consortium.

Harlem in Montmartre tells the story of the jazz age in Paris between the First and Second World Wars, exploring a fascinating yet often neglected era in African-American cultural history. After peace was signed at Versailles, many black Americans remained in Europe rather than return to the brutal segregation and racism of America; over the next two decades, they created an expatriate community of musicians, entertainers and entrepreneurs, primarily congregating in Paris’ hilly Montmartre neighborhood. Some achieved enduring fame, while others faded into history. Inspired by William A. Shack’s book and using rare archival material from both France and America, this remarkable documentary features footage of such key figures as James Reese Europe, Josephine Baker, Sidney Bechet, Bricktop, Eugene Bullard, Django Reinhardt and many more. In Oregon a woman inherited six large paintings created by her aunt, Thelma Johnson Streat. She believes they were mural studies commissioned by the WPA in the 1930s or ‘40s. History Detectivessets out to investigate if any of these studies became murals and if any of Streat’s murals still exist. A man in Ohio was sorting through documents when he stumbled across a miniature color painting of a man in profile labeled “G. Washington” with the inscription, “Property of White Matlack. New York, 1790.” Did the artist paint this portrait of Washington from life? The granddaughter of a World War II veteran wartime memento with a note claiming it’s a piece of Japanese balloon that floated across the Pacific Ocean in 1945. Tukufu Zuberi travels to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC, to learn whether this souvenir is a missing piece of a secret weapon.
