WPBT2 Launches Newly Redesigned uVu
WPBT2, Miami’s Public Television, launched the newest version of uVu, their exclusive community video site in March. uVu, which was developed with funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation along with support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, is unique in the world of public media. uVu is intended to create virtual and physical communities, encourage citizen participation and foster a greater appreciation of local arts and culture, while leveraging the trusted brand of both WPBT2 and PBS. The redesigned site features a brand new homepage, site layout, navigation and URL (www.uvuvideo.org).
The new site adds more focus on social networking and community engagement by allowing users to create their own profiles, add friends, widgets and create a dialog with people; think Youtube meets Facebook wrapped inside the mission of Public Broadcasting.
Members are able to create their own blogs, participate in the “question of the week” and share their thoughts on the message boards. Jessica Reyes, uVu’s Chief Operating Officer, explains why the new focus is so important, “The question of the week and other networking features are a great way to actively engage the South Florida community on an ongoing basis. We hope that the discussions will start online and continue on a much broader scale outside of the web. We encourage everyone to join the discussion, from students to politicians.”
The old Quicktime format has been replaced with embeddable Flash and full screen video. New features on the site include: a rating system, RSS feeds and personalized homepages. Neal Hecker, uVu’s Chief Content Officer, explains: “The site will feature some really interesting new wrinkles and place uVu squarely in line with other video and social network sites in terms of functionality and technology. But more importantly, the mission of the site is unchanged; this is a completely re-imagined uVu for a real Web 2.0 experience. What distinguishes uVu from other sites is the ‘real world’ element, consistent with WPBT2’s overall mission, to create ongoing community dialogue and promote more informed citizenry in the region where we all live and work.”
About uVu:
Launched in 2007, uVu is a video-sharing website and companion digital broadcast channel powered by WPBT2, Public Broadcasting in South Florida. The purpose of the site is to bring educational and cultural information to the local community through partnerships with community organizations and to give citizens an open forum to create their own points of “Vu.” uVu also offers users a weekly newsletter (http://tinyurl.com/uVuNewsletter) and social network opportunities (myspace.com/uvuvideo, http://tinyurl.com/uVuFacebook, https://twitter.com/uVu360). uVu shoots on location around South Florida and prepares selected segments for broadcast on WPBT2-2 as part of uVu TV (check TV listings for dates, times and channel designations).
uVu was launched with support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting

According to my point of view, uVu is a community video site and companion digital broadcast powered by WPBT Channel 2, South Florida ’s PBS station. The website consists of video content created and submitted to the site by individuals, community groups and cultural/educational institutions, which allows the community to experience, at any time, the important happenings of South Florida.
