The blue thread / one life, beautiful life

The blue thread / one life, beautiful life…
Artist Eric Anfinson to exhibit at The Studios of Key West

Sm1 KEY  WEST (Florida) — While perhaps invisible to the eye, there is an ethereal thread that ties our life's experiences together.  For painter Eric Anfinson it is also one that runs through all the paint in his confident and solid new body of work to be presented from April 4th to April 25th  at the Studios of Key West.  Anfinson’s exhibition,“the blue thread—one life/beautiful life,” will feature more than twenty original oil on canvas paintings and a special installation for the opening reception on Friday evening, April 4, from 7-9 p.m.

“The blue thread is the path,” says Anfinson, “while one life/beautiful life is the intention of healing.”

Anfinson, who often weaves in dreams, myths and archetypes while at work at his canvas, also allows his subconscious to guide him.  In between these two spaces of linear and non-linear process, the depth of chaos, difficulty and emotion reveal themselves through his paint.

Adventures in DTV

Coupon

Well, my $40 coupons arrived on Wednesday and I could barely wait for the weekend to go and spend them. Technically, they aren't coupons, but work like credit or gift cards. My cashier had a little problem because these were the first coupons she processed, but they swiped, were verified and I was on my way.

A quick comparison of the recommended vendors revealed that, quality aside, the store cost of these boxes seem to run from $49 to $59 each, so they aren't going to be "free" regardless of where you purchase them.

My suspicion is that there is little difference in the boxes and that they all have minimal functionality, but that was just a quick impression from poking at the display models in each store. If you want full HD on a widescreen TV, this isn't going to be the solution for you. I'm not ready to replace every TV set and because I have cable for all but one of my current TV sets, my plan was to test this on the one TV that isn't connected to a cable signal. The set in question wasn't even plugged in to a power source, it was one of those hand-me-down sets you tend to pick up along the way, when friends or relatives move (or buy new TVs) so my installation was really from square one.

I had a rabbit ear antenna which came with the TV. If you don't, you will need to get an antenna at an additional cost, anywhere between $9 to $50 in the store I settled on, if you want to install an outdoor antenna it could run significantly more.

Despite the cautions I had heard about early models of these converters, the set up was very easy, even if you tend to start pushing buttons before reading directions as I do. Although not entirely intuitive it wasn't difficult to follow the on screen prompts and the set up went quickly.

In the end, I was able to receive over 50 channels, although many aren't ones I'd consider watching, the percentage seems to be about the same as it is for my cable selections. The best news of all for me is that for the first time I can now see all of WPBT's digital channels outside of my office at work.

Do you have questions? Start by checking here

I'm sure all experiences will be different and it is worth doing a little research in advance to make sure you end up with the experience you expect, but I'm feeling like the transition to digital, overall, has become a little less frightening for me and I think that with just a little knowledge it can be the same for you.

Martina McBride: Live in Concert”

Martina1 GREAT PERFORMANCES: “Martina McBride: Live in Concert” airs on Monday, March 31 at 10:00 p.m.
– One From the Heart: Country Superstar Delights Fans, Viewers –
(Watch a preview here on uVu)

The real appeal of country music comes from just one place — the heart — and no one knows that better than Martina McBride. “You can always look at a fresh way of doing a song,” she says, “but it always has to resonate with the truth.”

A crossover success widely known for her many albums and television appearances, McBride offers a lively encore of her many hits, including “How I Feel,” “Love’s the Only House,” “This One’s for the Girls” and her 2007 Country Music Awards Song of the Year-nominated “Anyway,” the fastest-selling single of her career. Each is a small world in itself: direct, honest, immediate. “I’ll be singing ‘Independence Day’ at concerts the rest of my life,” she says of her 1993 signature song told from the point of view of a child now grown up. “I love the story. I get closer to it every time I sing it.”

UNNATURAL CAUSES: IS INEQUALITY MAKING US SICK?

Mushroom UNNATURAL CAUSES: IS INEQUALITY MAKING US SICK?
Thursdays, March 27-April 17 at 11:00 p.m. each week on WPBT/Channel 2 in Miami.
(Read a review from the Sun Sentinel here)

UNNATURAL CAUSES is a four-hour series that, for the first time on television, sounds the alarm about glaring socio-economic and racial inequities in health and searches for their causes.

The U.S. already spends twice per person on health care than any other industrialized nation. Yet our life expectancy ranks 30th; Costa Ricans live longer. Infant mortality? We’re tied with Hungary, Poland and Slovakia for next to last among industrialized nations. Illnesses cost American business more than a trillion dollars a year in lost productivity.

Further, research has revealed a gradient to health. At each step down the socio-economic ladder — from the rich to the middle class to the poor — people tend to be sicker and die sooner. It’s no surprise that poor Americans die eight years before the rich on average, but middle-class Americans die almost three years sooner than the rich.

UNNATURAL CAUSES looks at what’s making us sick in the first place, investigating startling new findings that suggest there is much more to poor health than bad habits, inadequate health care or unlucky genes. The series circles in on a slow killer in plain view: the social circumstances in which we are born, live and work that can affect our risk for disease as surely as germs and viruses.

KING CORN is a feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation. Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, best friends from college, move to the heartland town that was once home to their great-grandfathers. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, nitrogen fertilizers and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America’s most-productive, mostsubsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find is that the fat of the land is fattening us up, and their journey raises troubling questions about how we eat— and how we farm.

Caring for Your Parents

Mcardlegustafson_9949 Caring for Your Parents Premieres on WPBT/Channel2 in Miami on April 2, 2008 at 9 p.m.

As the population ages, many adult children are grappling with an unprecedented social, cultural, economic, and personal revolution as they transition into the primary caregiver role for their aging parents. Produced, written, and directed by award-winning filmmaker Michael Kirk, Caring for Your Parents is a moving two-hour special that draws much-needed attention to this universal reality.

The first 90-minutes of Caring for Your Parents underscores today's struggle to keep parents at home, tensions between siblings, and the complexity of shifting caregiver roles through an intimate look at five American families. In the end, the documentary contends successful caregiving requires one primary ingredient—love.

Immediately after the 90-minute broadcast, former NBC medical correspondent Dr. Art Ulene leads "A Conversation About Caring." This half-hour panel discussion offers concrete advice and guidance on how to start the conversation—often the most difficult step in caregiving.

Back To the Future

Terk_indoor_passive_rabbit_ear_ante With all the talk about the coming Digital Transition and the shut off of Analog television signals, there is one interesting option for some viewers which might make sense depending on your TV habits and that is considering an over-the-air signal instead of cable or satellite service.

Certainly this isn't a choice if you are a heavy viewer of  channels which come exclusively through cable of satellite delivery, but if most of your TV viewing is of local channels, and these local channels are all multicasting (such as WPBT now does), you may find you have more than enough choices to keep you happy AND it is all for free, just like the good old days.

Consider this survey which says that 62% of rabbit-ears watchers are opting for converter boxes or new digital TVs.  Of course if you can't live without HBO or ESPN, then this isn't the best solution for you, but if most of your TV time is spent watching your local channels, with more local options available through stronger digital signals, you can't beat the price.

If you have questions about all of this visit our DTV information site or give us a call at 1-800-222-WPBT during business hours.

Great Performances on WPBT/Channel 2

Hugh GREAT PERFORMANCES
Peter & the Wolf (airs Wednesday, March 26 at 8 p.m.)
Sergei Prokofiev’s fanciful musical tale Peter and the Wolf is given new life in this innovative animated interpretation. “Oldies will remember the work from school music lessons,” wrote London’s Observer , “while those coming to the story for the first time will be delighted with this darkly comic modernization.” Originally composed in 1936, the piece famously uses personified instruments in the orchestra to tell the story — also penned by the composer — of young Peter and his animal friends the Duck, the Bird and even a mischievous Cat (represented by an oboe, flute and clarinet, respectively). Peter, himself represented by the string section, becomes an unsuspecting hero and frees his small Russian village from the Wolf (French horns) intent on menacing the whole town — not to mention Peter’s beloved animal friends. Conceived and directed by award-winning animator Suzie Templeton, this modern-day “Peter and the Wolf” uses stop-frame model animation, puppets and digital photography to re-tell this enduring classic, and features the Philharmonia Orchestra under the direction of Mark Stephenson performing Prokofiev’s iconic score.

It's a wrap!

Surfside uVuTV episode 5 is in the can and it marks the first time that uVuTV was shot entirely on location. The uVu crew visited the beautiful city of Surfside yesterday in an effort to get out into the community and bring a more youthful look to the show. Since we have never shot a broadcast show on location, we were eager to play with the new equipment provided to us by production. Our new gadgets included a HDV camera, a lavalier microphone, a wireless lavalier microphone, and our favorite: the boom microphone. Because it was so windy by the beach (gusts of 20 mph) the production crew gave us a special wind proof boom mic, which coincidently looked a lot like a koala bear.

Stories of Truth and Hope

Puntocover The Human Services Coalition (HSC) is an organization we have worked with often over the last few months.  We share a common mission to connect Miami's divergent communities with educational resources and empower and inform our citizenry.  The HSC has recently published a book,  Punto de Partida: Stories of Truth and Hope, a passionate and poetic collection of newspaper columns by award-winning journalist Daniel Shoer Roth that seeks to spur readers to speak up and take action in their community.

Punto de Partida features 16 columns by Shoer Roth as originally published in Spanish in El Nuevo Herald and translated into English.

Paired with insightful essays from local leaders and photographs taken by Herald photographers, Shoer Roth's work illuminates South Florida's social challenges through the eyes of the under served and overlooked.

"Punto de Partida takes aim at the issues affecting how we live in South Florida and gives voice to the people overcoming all odds to build a better life," said Daniella Levine, president and CEO of HSC. "We want to inspire readers to make a difference in our community."

Recently, we had a chance to listen as Mr. Shoer Roth read an excerpt from the book and introduced us to the subject of his story, 104 year old Morris Rosen.  You can see and hear Mr. Shoer Roth reading "100 years of happiness: the story of friendship" on uVu, by clicking here.

Webwiseday2tape1eh Jonathan F. Fanton, President, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation delivered the Keynote address at the IMLS - Webwise Conference, Miami, Florida, March 6, 2008.

Titled "Rights and Responsibilities Online: A Paradox for Our Times,"  it was a cautionary tale of potential human rights violations in cyberspace and why the time to address these concerns is long overdue.  You can see all of Mr. Fanton's remarks on uVu, our video site, but here is a small sample:

Some see the activity in MySpace and Facebook as an alarming invasion of privacy; many young people see it as an essential tool of communication, learning and personal validation. Some view Wikipedia as a threat to traditional notions of credibility, authority, and expertise; others see it as an exciting new approach to sharing knowledge and authorship...

Tonight on NBR

Tonight on Nightly Business Report ...

President Bush on Nightly Business Report

BBC News Blues

As many callers and writers have noted, we are having a problem with the BBC News at 5:30pm on weekdays.
WPBT has been running the BBC News at 6am, 5:30pm and midnight for many years.  The 6am and midnight "feeds" of the News come to us via a PBS satellite, but the 5:30pm program comes to us through a special satellite feed, we are one of only a few stations in the country that offer the BBC News at an irregular time and that required a special receiver with a code provided directly from the BBC in order to decipher the video signal.
Well, our receiver took a hit and required replacement, which we have completed, but we have not been able to get a new access code from the BBC yet.
We are working with the distributor and the BBC to fix this problem.  Again the other two daily broadcasts are not impacted and it isn't our plan to eliminate the 5:30pm news, we hope to have the situation resolved shortly.

Widget Madness!

Nokia_widgets Yesterday I had the opportunity of sitting in on a forum called Widget World: The ME Revolution at the iFocos We Media conference. Jeff Nolan, VP of Business Development at News Gator kicked off the forum by defining widgets and how they work. So what exactly is a widget? Simply put, a widget is a self contained container of content that is portable. Widgets contain not only text, but images and video. Still not sure what a widget is? Well, if you’ve ever had a Facebook page or iGoogle page you know that you can add different applications to your profile such as daily quotes, horoscopes, videos, local weather, etc…, these examples of widgets.

Notes from WebWise

Index_r1_c1This morning, I'm writing from the Miami Beach Convention Center, where WebWise 2.0, a meeting hosted by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and locally by the Wolfsonian-FIU is going on for the next few days. Look for the video on uVu soon, particularly this mornings session, which was a real primer for Web 2.0. (You can read the WebWise Blog here)

Although there is already debate on what Web 3.0 is and what it will mean, there are still many people who are just beginning to come to terms with this great experiment in social networking, information sharing and online collaborating that we have come to accept as the norm with projects like uVu (and this blog).

Obviously it goes way beyond our simple efforts but take a look at these sessions, when they get posted (I'll update the link when they do) and you'll have a chance to catch up on 2.0 before 3.0 gets here.
