Biologists are on a mission to save Death Valley's most precious treasure --the tiny Devil's Hole Pupfish . From NATURE's Life in Death Valley airing on Sunday, September 2nd at 8 p.m. on WPBT/Channel 2 Miami.
Life in Death Valley captures the simmering cauldron of Death Valley; the hottest, driest place in the US, epic in its beauty but punishing in its brutal extremes. In a scorched landscape marked by endless miles of salt flats, molten rock canyons, and lunar craters, survival is a miracle in itself.

I gathered with some of my French friends on Monday to watch the America at a Crossroad episode on Channel2. I knew it would be an interesting show to watch, and I was right. It was strangely funny to see the gap between the French perspective on things and the American one.
Much of what was said was true; but some of it seemed a little exaggerated, in my opinion. Some of the interviews with French citizens in a typical bistro cafe were simplistic from my point of view because it really depends on the region you visit, the feelings about Americans vary greatly.

In
this weekend's NOW show, airing Sunday, August 26 at 11am, NOW talks to two soldiers who went AWOL and
eventually left the Army, but who took very different paths.
NOW
captures the moment when one man turns himself in, and when another
applies for refugee status in Canada, becoming one of the 20,000
soldiers who have deserted the army since the War in Iraq began.
Each
describes what drove him to follow his conscience over his call to
duty, and what penalties and criticism were endured as a result.
While rumors of Castro's death have begun to grow again, the South Florida community waits for confirmation in either case. All Miami residents are anxious for the news.
The bigger question in the days that will follow that eventuality is what would the Post-Castro world look like?
Recently ISSUES host Helen Ferre sat down with acclaimed writer and journalist Carlos Alberto Montaner to explore that question.
The two segments can be seen here (part1/part2). They are conducted in Spanish but with English subtitles.
THE
WAR, a seven-part series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn
Novick, tells the story of the Second World War through the personal
accounts of a handful of men and women from four quintessentially
American towns.
Almost all of the thousands of hours of film
collected for THE WAR arrived with no sound. Directors Ken Burns and
Lynn Novick explain the journey from silence to surround sound.
Local news is the
heartbeat of democracy, so why is it disappearing from many communities
around the nation? Media consolidation isn't widely covered by the
mainstream press, but potential changes being considered to the rules
governing the nation's big media companies could have far reaching
effects on democracy.
Bill Moyers Journal devotes an hour to
this important issue with a report on the disappearance of local news
and community radio and in-depth interviews with journalist Rick Karr,
media activist Hannah Sassaman, and FCC Commissioner Michael Copps.
The program airs Friday, August 24 at 9 p.m. on WPBT/Channel 2 in Miami.

On Thursday night, August 16th, in an auditorium on the Miami-Dade College Wolfson Campus, uVu had a front row seat for a conversation between Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and the members of Genertion Engage in South Florida. Generation Engage (or GenGage) is a nonpartisan youth-civic-engagement initiative that connects young Americans to political leaders, to other civic organizations, and to meaningful debate about the future they will inherit.
The organization is built on the belief that young people suffer not from a lack of interest, but from a lack of access and access was what the evening was all about.
On Wednesday, August 22 at 9pm, WPBT/Channel 2 in Miami will run Cities of Light: The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain. The following article was written by Alexander Kronemer, the Executive Producer of that program.
The past is often a good guide for the future. Sometimes it provides examples of glory and success that serve as models. Other times, as the philosopher George Santayana said, it
warns of impending calamity for those who do not learn from it.
A few nights ago, we presented the South Florida premiere of a performance special featuring the internationally renowned singer Rocio Jurado. The program, Rocio Siempre, served as a tribute to Ms. Jurado, who sadly, passed away a little more than a year ago.
The response was phenomenal and the calls keep on coming.
Based on that response and the request from many more who missed the first broadcast, WPBT will present the film again this weekend, Sunday, August 19 at 7:00 pm. Here is a brief description of the program:
Coming in September to WPBT/Channel 2 in Miami this visually stunning
ode to time, music, and the stars, Timothy Ferris' SEEING IN THE DARK
celebrates the wonders of stargazing -- from kids learning the
constellations to amateur astronomers doing professional-grade research
in discovering planets and exploding stars.
Ever since the broadcast premiere earlier this year, the question about Home Video and DVD's of this program have continued to come in. Unfortunately, the film is not available on DVD at this time. Elsewhere in this blog you can find a few entries, written by the filmmaker, Ela Troyano, addressing the question as well. It is her hope to have the DVD available at some point, but as of this date the rights are still for broadcast only. The good news is that WPBT/Channel 2 in Miami will be repeating the program in September.

Very late in December, 1968, I was spending the winter
recess at my cousin’s house in East Flatbush. A few days after Christmas, my Aunt bundled
up our 10 year old bodies and took us for a subway ride into Manhattan. Besides the display windows and holiday shopper gawking, our prime objective was to see a film that was only playing in one theatre. It had just opened and came highly recommended by older cousins who lived in San
Francisco
UPDATE: August 10, 2007: The interviews that were done can now be seen on uVu.
Earlier this week, Jessy (uVu producer) and I went to
Aventura to film an interview with the Chonga Girls for the Citizen J
show (on uVu). For those of you unfamiliar with
the Chonga Girls, they took a song by pop singer Fergie called "Fergalicious" and
remade it into “Chongalicious,” in which they parody a dress
style and lifestyle of some Latin women in their age group. The video has been all over the internet and
the track has also made the rounds on some local radio stations. Here are some the
self-deprecating lyrics so you can have an idea of what I’m describing:
Take a sneak peak at on of the new programs joining WPBT/Channel 2's KidVision lineup in September. It's called SUPER Why and here is a look at one of the "stars" of the show.
This amazing group of performers will be making another south Florida appearance in the near future and you can find out about it this evening at 8pm, while you watch a televised version of one of their concerts. This performance special, recorded at historic Slane Castle, features the talented original Celtic Woman members — singers Chloe, Lisa, Méav and Orla and violinist Máiréad — joined by New Zealand-born singer Hayley Westenra, whose forebears hailed from County Monaghan. The songs are a blend of classics, contemporary hits and original material arranged by David Downes.
If you'd like an advanced look you can see an interview with some of the performers here courtesy of WPBT/Channel 2's own ART 360..
What is high definition TV (HDTV)? How is it different from analog television?
HDTV is a name given to two of the digital television (DTV) formats. HDTV provides high resolution programming. A current analog TV picture is made up of horizontal lines on the picture screen; an HDTV picture can have more than twice as many lines, allowing for stunning picture detail.
